1. Calculate your debt. This is a tough one, because debts sometime come out of the woodwork. Sit down with pen and paper and list all your debts.

2. Create four columns which will show the creditor owed, amount owning, monthly payment, and due date. At the bottom of the page, create a total for all the debt outstanding.

3. Decide on a strategy which will work for you. It could be a choice of debt settlement, debt consolidation, working with a debt counselor, stopping payment to your creditors and defaulting while you accumulate enough money to pay the debt off. Whatever the strategy is, it needs to be the right solution for you.

4. Set debt goals with deadlines to follow. Read Steven Covey's 7 habits of highly effective people.

5. Setup your finances on quicken or quickbooks. Diligently log your expenses and income every month.

6. Create a budget of how much you can spend and stick to it. Start economizing with shopping, eating, entertainment and utilities. Take lunch to work instead of buying it every day. Make coffee at home instead of buying at Starbucks.

7. Create a five year plan and decide how you want your debt and wealth situation to be in that time period.

8. Look for alternate ways to make money to pay debts faster, and start saving.

9. Create healthy financial habits and stick diligently to them.

10. Resolve to never be in debt again, and pay cash for everything you want.

With these ten strategies, as well as having a plan, you will gain confidence in yourself and your abilities again. So get to it, and begin your upwards ascent to financial freedom in 2010.
